USER FEES CAN BE APPLIED TO PASTURES
A market economy dictates that user fees for any resource use serve a good economic mechanism to prevent overuse. Pastures in Mongolia are used free of any fees. The policy may seem favorable for herders at first, but in fact it encourages the misuse of pastures, thus contradicts the long term interest for securing herders’ livelihoods by ensuring sustainable livestock sector development.

SLP-II closing national workshop held
The workshop titled “Pastureland and risk management experiences: key outcomes and further objectives” was organized on 7 March 2012 involving representatives of the Parliament, MOFALI, Agency for Land Relations, Construction, Geodesy and Cartography (ALRCGC), NAMHEM, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and some international donor projects active in pastureland management. Each of 21 aimags was represented by heads of aimag Land Agency, aimag Authority for Food, Agriculture and SME (AFASME) and aimag SLP-II project coordinators. In addition land officers or officer in charge of pastures from soum Veterinary and Breeding Unit (VBU) from demo soums in 8 aimags covered by SLP-I.

The CPR, following the Peri-urban Rangeland project had provided latest model HP, high performance printers, copiers and scanners to the soum veterinary and breeding unit. In order to assist veterinary and breeding units (VBU) of 42 project participant soums around Ulaanbaatar, Darkhan and Erdenet areas in implementing the “Mongolian Livestock” program and successfully cooperating with the MCA Peri-urban Rangeland Project, the the Center of Policy Research provided VBU with latest model, high performance multifunction HP printer/copier/scanner.
