Detailed Narrative Description of Project:
The World Bank Sustainable Livelihoods has 3 core components: 1) pastoral risk management component; 2) development of community investment funds; and 3) improving the role of rural micro-finance services. The pastoral risk management component aims to reduce the vulnerability of herders and enhance their resilience to drought, dzud (‘winter disasters’) and other shocks through testing and developing approaches in support of risk forecasting and contingency planning; grazing and pasture management; herder self-help initiatives; and hay and fodder enterprise development.
Development objective of the assignment is to address the longer-term development challenges in the livestock sector, including issues of grazing land tenure and management, conflict management, livestock and livestock product marketing channels

Detailed Description of Actual Services provided by your Company:
- Designed project methodologies for studying the pastureland use, water use, herders’ group development, livestock risk management and digital mapping for pastureland water use
- Completed a primary field survey for all 143 soums (one soum averaging 300,000 ha) of 8 aimags, namely Uvs, Bayan-Ulgii, Bayankhongor, Uvurkhangai, Tuv, Dundgoibi, Umnugobi, Dornod, to collect primary on:
- Seasonal camps of herders
- Water points on pastures by use types (hand wells, engineered/deep wells, operational status and well attributes)
- User rights of pasture and water resources, migration patterns and routes of herders in both normal and emergency weather conditions
- Specific resources including otor reserve pastures and salt licks
- Pastureland capacity indicators, grass yield and protein content
- Location, membership and collective actions in the areas of pastureland water use, feed preparation, livestock herding, marketing and social networks system of informal herders groups (5 to 30 families)
- Boundaries of soums, bags, herders groups, specific units such as protected areas, degraded pastures, crop and hay making fields
- Processed the field survey results using GIS software and produced the following digital maps with 1:100000 scale:
- Base pasture use map, by winter-spring and summer-autumn seasons (all 143 soums)
- Pasture water supply map (all 143 soums)
- Stocking density map by 4 seasons and annual (all 143 soums)
- Currying capacity map (selected 16 soums)
- Estimated carrying capacity map (selected 16 soums)
- Identified a total of 309 herders groups in all 143 soums of 8 project aimags and assisted in institutional strengthening of them to upgrade into formal entities in accordance with the law on NGO and the cooperative law
- Collected secondary data and conducted interviews with local stakeholders on Institutional Support for Herder Groups, Pasture/water Management Planning/Mapping and Risk Forecasting and Contingency Planning
- Produced pastureland management and contingency plans for all 143 soums in 8 project aimags
- Organized extensive capacity building training for local governments, bags and herders groups on herders group development, improved pastureland management/mapping and contingency planning/early warning in all 143 soums and provided training materials to all project aimags and soums
- Produced and disseminated manual on herders group development in accordance with the existing legal environment /law on NGO and cooperative law and others/, bulletin on early warning systems, guidelines and leaflets on pastureland use mapping, grazing conflict resolution mechanism in all 143 soums of 8 project aimags
- Undertook extensive public relations activities in project aimags using the local mass media
