Description of Project:

Northern Railways LLC is a group of predominantly private companies formed in order to facilitate the construction of the proposed approximately 415km-long northern rail link between Murun and Erdenet in northern Mongolia. The rail link is expected to open access to a number of resource related projects in the Khuvsgul aimag. The implementation of this project is expected to bring serious changes and impacts on the social and economic environment of the Orkhon, Bulgan and Khuvsgul aimags, both positive and negative.

The baseline study purpose is collect key primary and secondary information that could be used reference points for describing the current social and economic situation as well as useful base information for future steps in project development including social impact assessment. 

Detailed Description of Actual Services provided by your Company:

  • Developed and tested survey questionnaire, guides for focus group discussions (FGD) and templates for secondary data
  • Compiled and trained 4 survey teams
  • Produced an appropriate sample at 95% confidence level to represent the entire population
  • Organized fieldwork involving questionnaire survey of 380 urban and 265 herder households and interviews and groups discussions for around 600 individuals and organizations. Herder households were selected using random sampling from each of predetermined wealth strata in each bag in terms of animals owned: 0-50, 51-100, 101-200, 201-500, 501-1000 and 1001 and more. Interviews were conducted within an open framework that allowed for focused, conversational, two-way communication.
  • Cash bonus of MNT 5000 was paid to each participant
  • Conduced computer-assisted (laptops) and GPS-recorded land use survey covering 420.3 km long strip with 81.9 thousand ha locating each household’s four seasonal camps and produced digital maps on land uses and impacted groups
  • Organized data entry and processing using CSPro and SPSS
  • Analyzed the processed data and prepared reports in English and Mongolian on key dimensions of the social and economic life along the projected railway track
